Since 1984, Dr. Hopgood has been a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, achieving Fellowship status in 1998, an award received after completing at least 500 hours of continuing education credits in approved subject areas, and successfully passing a full day comprehensive examination covering 16 different subject areas. Dr. Hopgood was awarded Mastership status in the Academy of General Dentistry at the annual meeting in San Diego in 2007. Mastership is awarded after completing an additional 600 hours of approved continuing education, 400 hours of which must be in hands-on courses. See Our Press Release Here. Dr. Hopgood was elected a member of the American Equilibration Society in 1986. The American Equilibration Society was founded 50 years ago to pursue the study of and treatment for Temporomandibular disorders, occlusion, and overall health of the masticatory system. It is an international society comprised of members from over 40 nations, and is the oldest society engaged in these scientific pursuits in the world. In addition, Dr. Hopgood is an active member of the Massachusetts Dental Society, the Merrimack Valley Dental Society, and the Greater Lawrence Dental Society. Dr. Hopgood is devoted to excellence in patient care through ongoing continuing education and mentoring from many of the masters of the dental arts. With the many great advancements in dental treatment available today, Dr. Hopgood seeks to bring state-of-the-art care to his patients. The most recent of these advancements is the Perio-Lase dental laser and associated periodontal treatment protocol, where Dr. Hopgood remains the only practitioner in Northern Massachusetts to offer these services. Dr.
Richard D. Hopgood is a 1978 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Tufts University
School of Dental Medicine, earning membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon,
the national dental honor fraternity, and was the recipient of the
Pierre Fauchard Award for academic and clinical excellence. Following
a one year general practice hospital residency at the Tufts New England
Medical Center and a three year association with a general practice
in Arlington, Dr. Hopgood established his current practice in Andover
in 1982. Dr. Hopgood was appointed to the faculty of Tufts University
School of Dental Medicine in 1980, overseeing a clinic in the Shattuck
Hospital staffed by dental residents. A member of the American Dental
Association since dental school, Dr. Hopgood received a Special Commendation
in 1986 from the American Dental Association for his pursuit of significant
continuing education.
