Bulimia Nervosa
Bulimia is an eating and psychiatric disorder that primarily affects
thousands of teenage and young adult females. This disease, characterized
by it’s binge eating episodes can cause serious harm to teeth as well
as the patients overall health. Bulimics severely restrict their diet,
often ending in
binge eating, and try to control their weight by vomiting, fasting, and
occasionally abusing laxatives and/or diuretics. Tooth decay and an increase
in cavities are common among bulimics due to the acid left in the mouth,
a decreased saliva flow, and massive consumption of carbohydrates while
binging. Repeated vomiting can result in loss of tooth enamel, decay,
and gum disease. After repeated exposure to gastric acid, teeth can change
shape, become soft, and fillings may even stick out above the tooth surface.
Decay, when left untreated will lead to more serious problems, possibly
even the loss of the tooth itself. Typical signs detected by dental professionals
are: chemical erosions of teeth, dry mouth and decreased saliva flow,
redness of the throat and/or red sores on the palate, and dry, cracked
lips. If you or someone you know has bulimia it is extremely important
to talk to your physician and to discuss the problem with Dr. Hopgood.
If left untreated, this disease can lead to the loss of your teeth as
well as the loss of life.
