Diabetes

If you are a patient with diabetes, it is important that you follow your normal insulin and food intake schedule as closely as possible when coming in for any dental treatment. For some patients, a trip to the dentist can cause anxiety and stress, decreasing insulin in the body. We urge you to eat normally prior to your visit and at long appointments we encourage you to bring a snack. After dental procedures, some patients may delay eating or even skip a meal due to numbness or appointment timing. To avoid a hypoglycemic attack, follow your normal routine -- including monitoring your blood sugar levels here in the office. Patients who are in control of their diabetes can undergo most dental procedures with little complications. More precautions may need to be taken for those who struggle with control of the disease. Please discuss this with your primary care physician and Dr. Hopgood.

High blood sugar causes bacteria to flourish and grow in the mouth, causing red and swollen gums and, when not controlled, is directly linked to gum disease. It is extremely important that you keep your glucose levels as close to normal as possible, brush and floss regularly, have professional dental cleanings as Dr. Hopgood prescribes, and do your best to maintain adequate home care. If you are concerned that you have loose or sensitive teeth, bad breath, bleeding gums or swollen gums, don’t hesitate to give Dr. Hopgood a call to schedule an appointment—it may be that you are experiencing signs of gum disease.

In order to keep your teeth and gums strong, you should have cholesterol, triglyceride, and blood sugar levels checked regularly. We also urge you to make your lengthy dental appointments in the morning as blood glucose levels tend to be better under control at these times.
