Sensitive Teeth

Millions of adults in the United States suffer at some point in their lives with sensitive teeth. If you suffer from “dentinal hypersensitivity” chances are sipping hot coffee or eating ice cream can be painful. Sensitive teeth result when the underlying layer of your teeth (the dentin) becomes exposed. This can happen on the chewing surface of the tooth as well as at the gum line. In some cases, sensitive teeth are the result of gum disease, years of clenching and/or grinding your teeth, improper brushing, and cracked or fractured teeth.

Hot and cold temperature changes cause your teeth to expand and contract. Over time, your teeth can develop microscopic cracks that allow these sensations to seep through to the nerves. Exposed areas of the tooth can cause discomfort and even affect or change your eating habits so you don’t wince with pain after eating certain foods.

For some patients desensitizing toothpaste such as Sensodyne decreases discomfort significantly. For others, procedures such as sealants, topical desensitizing agents applied by Dr. Hopgood, restoring teeth with filling(s), and placing crowns/onlays when teeth have been fractured stop the pain. Also, decreasing the intake of acid containing foods may alleviate some of the pain associated with sensitive teeth.

Call Dr. Hopgood if you notice any change in your teeth’s sensitivity to temperature or if you suspect a crack or fracture.
