Oral Cancer
Approximately 40,000 new cases of oral cancer are reported annually in
the United States, and cause nearly 9,000 deaths. Men are twice as likely
as women to develop the disease and it is most common in patients who
are over 45 years of age, and smokers
or tobacco chewers. The tongue is the most frequent source of cancer in
the mouth, followed by the floor of the mouth, soft palate tissues, the
back of the tongue, lips, and gums. The risk of oral cancer increases
six times with tobacco and 15 times when tobacco and alcohol use are combined.
Because red, white, or discolored lesions, or lumps in or around the mouth
may not be painful in the beginning stages, oral cancer is usually not
diagnosed early and has the worst five-year survival rate at 54%.
If
you have a sore in your mouth that lasts longer than two weeks, swelling,
growth, or lump in your mouth or neck, white or red patches in the mouth
or on the lips, repeated bleeding from the mouth or throat, or difficulty
swallowing, call our office immediately. Dr. Hopgood will evaluate the
lesion, and if necessary a biopsy will be performed to confirm the diagnosis.
It is extremely important for patients to see us regularly as an oral cancer screening is performed at every cleaning and check-up appointment. Successful treatment and rehabilitation depends on early detection and the earlier the cancer is found, the better the chance of survival you have. If you notice any unusual lesions, sores, or lumps on your neck or in your mouth don’t wait call the office today.
