Pacifiers
and Thumb Sucking
Many children use pacifiers and thumb sucking as a way of comforting
themselves. Unfortunately, when used for extended periods of time there
can be damage done to permanent teeth and the jaw. Generally, thumb-sucking
and pacifier usage should cease by the age of two, otherwise permanent
teeth may grow in crowded and crooked causing severe bite problems in
later life. With continued usage, the upper jaw may grow faster than the
lower jaw causing an overjet (also known as an overbite) traditionally
called “buck teeth”. A palatal appliance may be required to stop the habit
as well as fix the problem when the permanent teeth erupt.
