Oral Piercing
In recent years, it has become “trendy” for young adults to pierce their
tongue, upper lips, lower lips, cheeks, or combinations of these sites.
The tongue is the most popular place for piercing(s) in the mouth—with
jewelry (studs, hoops, barbells, etc.) usually placed in the middle of
the tongue towards the tip. Unfortunately, piercing(s) are often performed
by unlicensed practitioners who are self-taught and do not use proper
infection control techniques (disposable gloves, disposable instruments,
etc.). This increases the risk of getting many diseases such as hepatitis,
HIV, herpes, etc.
Often times the jewelry placed on the tongue chips and cracks teeth leading
to serious dental problems. When biting on the jewelry for extended periods
of time a night guard or splint may be necessary to protect the teeth.
It is extremely important to clean the mouth after every meal if you have
a piercing (this includes removing the jewelry and rinsing with an antibacterial
mouthwash). Hard and sticky foods should be avoided as they have a tendency
to tug on the jewelry leading to discomfort.
