When to PreMedicate

The American Heart Association (AHA) has recommended that people with certain conditions such as Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP), people that have had joint replacement, and people that have had certain types of implants (i.e. hip, knee), artificial body parts, or if you have taken Phen-Fen and/or Redux need to take an antibiotic prior to any dental treatment with the possibility of bleeding to prevent infection. Oral bacteria can enter your bloodstream any time there is bleeding in the mouth, and for people in high risk categories, bacteria may settle on deformed heart valves or muscle tissue and can cause serious inflammation. This is a life-threatening condition called bacterial endocarditis.

It is important to tell Dr. Hopgood and/or his staff if you have any heart condition before beginning any dental procedure that is likely to cause bleeding. For more information and to view guidelines set by the American Heart Association visit them on the web at www.AmericanHeart.org.
