Air Abrasion/Micro abrasion
Even though
modern technology has made getting an injection of Novocain virtually
painless, there is now an alternative. Air abrasion (also called micro
abrasion) works much like a sand blaster. By using an air abrasion hand
piece, the doctor is able to blow powerful oxide particles onto the tooth
surface. The particles bounce off the tooth and blast the decay away.
Air abrasion systems produce no vibration and operate very quietly. This
technology allows the doctor to cut tooth surfaces with precision, requiring
the removal of less tooth structure than the traditional dental drill.
There is little or no discomfort, no anesthetic is needed, and treatment
time is usually shorter. Although it cannot be used for all procedures,
it is a great option for children who may be afraid of an injection and
the "whirring" sounds of a regular dental drill.
Since air abrasion procedures can leave an accumulation of dusty particle debris, Dr. Hopgood will place a rubber dam to serve as a particle barrier prior to the procedure. Suction will be used to reduce the dust and the dental assistant will use a vacuum hose suctioning technique while administering the procedure.
