Anesthetics
Local anesthetics
are used in many dental procedures such as tooth restorations, crowns,
bridges, veneers, implants, and periodontal laser therapy. Prior to your
injection, a topical anesthetic is applied to the gum tissue by a cotton
swab to numb the injection site. The topical anesthetic comes as a flavored
gel (such as cherry, pineapple, etc.) and is used to numb the immediate
area and reduce pain on a surface level. Much like the over-the-counter
product Orajel, it also can be used to relieve pain from canker sores
and discomfort from teething and braces.
One
of our primary objectives is to provide comprehensive dentistry with the
least discomfort. “The Wand” helps us achieve this goal. The wand is a
computer controlled local anesthetic delivery system. This system out-performs
all conventional syringes in precision and comfort. Dr. Hopgood uses this
instrument because it allows him to administer anesthetic with an unprecedented
level of accuracy that provides more consistency, predictability and safety.
Local anesthetics such as Lidocaine, Carbocaine, or Novocain are injected
into the gum tissue near the tooth that is being treated. The anesthetics
produce a temporary numbness by blocking the nerves that transmit pain.
The numbness usually wears off in a few hours, but does vary by patient.
If you have had an allergic reaction to Novocain, Lidocaine, or Carbocaine
in the past, please let us know prior to the start of any procedure and
an alternative anesthetic will be used.
