Grafts

Soft tissue grafts are usually performed to treat gum disease or correct other abnormalities seen at the gum line. Soft tissue grafts are used to cover roots or develop gum tissue where there is recession, and to improve the esthetics of the gum line. An exposed tooth root may cause pain (sometimes severe) due to temperature changes in different foods and drinks, and has also been associated with one tooth looking longer than another (because the gum has receded). The procedure involves taking healthy gum tissue (usually from the palate, but can be taken from another donor source) and grafting it over the areas where the root has been exposed. Once contributing factors have been controlled, a successful graft will repair the defect and help prevent additional recession. If you are concerned about recession please call us to schedule an examination.
