Gum (Flap) Surgery and The PerioLase Laser
Healthy
bone and gum tissue fit snugly around the teeth. If you have periodontal
disease, the supporting tissue and bone is destroyed, forming “pockets”
around the teeth. Over time, these pockets become deeper, providing a
larger space for bacteria to thrive and wreak havoc. As bacteria multiply
and advance under the gum tissue, additional bone loss will follow. Eventually,
if too much bone is lost, the teeth will fall out, or need to be extracted.
Traditional Flap surgery is performed to remove tartar deposits in deep
pockets or to reduce the periodontal pocket and make it easier for you
to keep the area clean and bacteria free. Commonly, this uncomfortable
surgery involves cutting the gums, and lifting them back to remove the
tartar. The gums are then sutured back in place so that the tissue fits
snugly around the tooth again.
New technologies have given us the ability to make your dental care far
more comfortable, efficient and beneficial. With the PerioLase® Laser,
we now have the ability to complete flap surgery without any cutting and
sewing of the gums. Our motto here in the office is "No Cut, No Sew,
No Fear".
Most
patients are aware that gum disease can increase your risk of heart disease
four fold. However, 80% of adults are unaware that they have some form
of gum infection. Dr. Hopgood uses Laser Periodontal Theraphy to remove
diseased tissue without removing any of the healthy tissue. The height
of the tissue around the teeth is maintained, your discomfort is significantly
minimized. and you get a closure of the periodontal pocket allowing healing
to take place. Controlling periodontal disease makes it possible to save
and restore more of your teeth. Call Dr. Hopgood today at 978-475-2431
to request more information or to set up an appointment to discuss this
exciting advancement in dentistry.
