ImplantsThere are millions of Americans that are self-conscious about their smile. Commonly patients complain that they aren’t happy with their teeth and their smile due to a lost tooth or the fact that they wear dentures. If you wear dentures or partials and are disappointed because they tend to slip and make chewing difficult, or if you have lost a tooth dental implants may be the solution for you. Dental implants look and feel like your natural teeth and can be used to replace one missing tooth, several missing teeth, or can be used to secure your dentures. Unlike traditional bridges, they don’t rely on surrounding teeth for support and are permanent and stable. The procedure can be completed quickly here in the office and there is generally little discomfort. Endosteal implants (the most common type of implant) are similar to your tooth’s root and are surgically placed in the bone. Endosteal implants are generally used as an alternative for patients with bridges or removable dentures who want more natural looking and functioning teeth. An additional type of implant is called a Subperiosteal implant. This is commonly used for patients who have limited jaw structure, therefore needing a custom-made metal framework which fits directly on the existing bone.
Implants first entail a procedure to place the implant (“anchor”) into the bone. The surgery is usually completed in an hour and generally requires three months for the bone to grow around the anchor and firmly hold it in place. Some implants require a second appointment in which an abutment (or “post”) is attached to connect to the anchor to the replacement tooth, while others have both procedures completed on the same day. After the gums have had several weeks to heal, you will be scheduled for a second appointment. At this time, an impression is taken, and for the final visit, the implant crown (which has been fabricated by the laboratory) is fitted to the post portion of the anchor. Generally the procedure takes three visits over a series of months. Poor oral hygiene and tobacco are two major reasons why implants fail. It is important to floss and brush around the implant crowns at least twice a day and to stop using tobacco. Dr. Hopgood will give you specific instructions on how to care for your implants. In addition, more frequent visits for additional cleanings may be required to ensure you retain healthy gums. Advanced Dental Concepts Copyright © 2005 Advanced Dental Concepts, All
